With 2015 over it is time to look ahead to 2016 and the movies that will entertain us in the year to come. This is my personal top ten for my most anticipated movies of the year. It was extremely difficult to whittle down to a final ten, so first things first I will start off with a few that missed the cut.
Honourable mentions: The Jungle Book, Midnight Special, The Girl on the Train, Deadpool, Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed.
Martin Scorsese’s next film might not have the broad mass appeal of many in 2016 but one certainly due for awards recognition. Adam Driver, Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield star in film that sees Two Jesuit Portuguese Catholic priests face violent persecution when they travel to Japan to seek out their mentor and spread the teachings of Christianity.
9. Doctor Strange
Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the title role of the Sorcerer Supreme in what is set to be one of Marvel’s weirdest films to date. The story follows Stephen Strange, the world’s top neurosurgeon, who when injured in a car accident that ruins his career, sets out on a journey of healing, where he encounters the Ancient One. Also featuring Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams and directed by Scott Derrickson, “Doctor Strange has all the right ingredients for a spectacular movie going experience.
8. Triple 9
“The Proposition” and “The Road” director John Hillcoat takes on this crime thriller where a group of corrupt cops plan the murder of a rookie police officer in order to pull off an heist when being blackmailed by the Russian Mafia. Featuring an all star stellar cast of Casey Affleck, Kate Winslet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie and Aaron Paul.
7. The Nice Guys
Shane Black (“Kiss Kiss Bang Bang,” “Iron Man 3”) brings his witty dialogue and cool noir directing style to this 1970s dark comedy thriller where a private eye and an heavy investigate the apparent suicide of a fading porn star and uncovers a conspiracy. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling lead, with supporting turns from Kim Basinger and Keith David.
6. X-Men Apocalypse
After commercial and critical success of the sixties set “First Class” and Seventies set “Days of Future Past” the X-Men are back in the eighties and must face their greatest test yet, the ancient mutant Apocalypse. Bryan Singer is back for his fourth directorial effort in the “X-Men” franchise, with many of the series most well known mutant characters showing up in younger incarnations. Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence star.
5. Bourne 5
After the Jason Bourne-less “Legacy”, Matt Damon is back in the latest currently untitled fifth instalment with Paul Greengrass back to direct. Plot details are currnetly unknown, but with Greengrass and Damon back working on the series this is sure to have all the hallmarks of the previous highly entertaining spy thrillers. Tommy Lee Jones, Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander and Vincent Cassel also star.
4. Suicide Squad
There is something intriguing about Warner Bros. decision to produce such an left field entry to their DC Expanded Universe so early in its life, they will be hoping for a similar result as Marvel got with “Guardians of the Galaxy”. The story follows a secret government agency that recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions in exchange for clemency. Famous villains from DC’s rogues gallery will feature, including The Joker, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc and Deadshot. Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne all star.
3. Captain America: Civil War
The Marvel Cinematic Universe juggernaut ploughs on with the latest entry of the “Captain America” series that will likely prove to more “Avengers” 2.5. THe film will mark the first appearance of both “The Black Panther” and perhaps more excitingly, “Spider-Man” in the MCU. Our heroes must all decide which side of the argument they are on when Cap and Tony Stark are found on separate sides of a rift caused by political interference. Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Paul Rudd, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Chadwick Boseman all star.
2. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
This in all other years and if perhaps it would have been another Episode to the saga would have been easily number one on my list; but with what is no.1 and the fact that I am slightly nervous of director Gareth Edwards after his highly disappointing and unsatisfying “Godzilla”. That being said, I can’t wait to see the story of how the original plans to the Death Star were obtained, also with the likely hood that we get an appearance from Darth Vader on film again. Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker and Riz Ahmed all star.
1. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
The first appearance on film together of the two most popular superheroes on the planet, Clark Kent meets Bruce Wayne. With the Batman and Superman clashing on screen and the direction of Zack Snyder, “B V S” promises to be one of the most visually spectacular films of next year. I don’t think my anticipation has ever been so high for a single movie, so this was an easy no.1, despite the slightly disappointing most recent trailer.
