Chloe Moretz (“Kick Ass,” “The Equalizer”) is set to play the title character in the live-action film version of the classic Hans Christian Andersen story “The Little Mermaid” at Working Title and Universal Pictures.

Little is known about how this version and how it will compare to previous interpretations of the Hans Christian Andersen story. The story follows a mermaid who wished to become human after falling in love with a man she saved from drowning.

It is not an adaptation of 1989s Disney animated film. With Disney’s numerous live-action adaptations of their animated classics in the works,  it seems Universal is hoping to capitalize on brand recognition and in the process beat Disney to the punch.

Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation”) was previously attached to direct but left the project after creative differences. Richard Curtis is in negotiations to write the script while Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan will produce.
