Cinematic Universes are now the Hollywood trend, we have an established Marvel universe, a DC Extended Universe in its infancy and their are plans for a Transformers Universe. Now it seems there may be another on the way.

Variety is reporting that Universal Pictures and Vin Diesel are planning a “Fast and Furious” cinematic universe, said universe will include spinoff movies and prequels.

This follows on from news last month that F. Gary Gray (“Straight Outta Compton”) is set to direct the eighth movie in the main series, and the start of a planned new trilogy.

The series star and producer Diesel tells the trade paper that there are already plans on potential the spin-offs:

“We’ve written out story lines for various characters. We’ve been playing with it for a long time. It’s a very rich property and we’re committed to treating it with a lot of class.”

Donna Langley Chairman of Universal Pictures confirmed discussions are taking place:

“We’re certainly in conversations about how we can expand the franchise now. It’s an ensemble cast and there’s room to bring characters in and out.”

Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Jeff Shell says that although the plan was for the series to close out after the new trilogy, that may not necessarily be the case:

“Vin has a vision in his mind for three more, so let’s get three more done and then see where we are from there. Everything has an end, so I don’t think our expectation is we’re going to have a hundred of them…To me ‘Fast and Furious’ has become no different than a beloved series that comes on every year.”

Plans for an expansion of this series comes as no surprise, “Furious 7” earned a mammoth $1.514 billion worldwide.
