After the months of hype and speculation “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has opened to a record box office opening weekend, with a massive $238 million. This comfortably beats the previous record of $208 million held by “Jurassic World” that came out this Summer.
It also bagged the record for the biggest single day opening, with $100 million. Along with setting the individual record it also helped set a new record for the most money ever taken in US movie theatres in a single weekend.
After previously thought to have fallen short, Disney chairman Bob Iger told Bloomberg TV this morning that “The Force Awakens” has earned $528 million internationally, subsequently beating the record for worldwide opening, that was held by Jurassic World with $524.9 million. The international record is even more impressive when we take into the account that film is yet to open in China.
Update: “The Force Awakens” is now confirmed to have taken $248 million at the domestic box office according to Box Office Mojo.
Universal Pictures also took the time to congratulate the film for beating theirs, “Jurassic World”.
