Deadline reports that Robert Rodriguez is in negotiations to direct the 20th Century Fox movie “Alita: Battle Angel”, with James Cameron and Jon Landau producing. A live action adaptation of the of Yukito Kishiro’s Japanese manga and graphic novel series.
Set in the post-apocalyptic future (26th Century), the story focusses on Alita, a cyborg who has lost all memory of her past life. She is found in a scrap heap by a cybernetics doctor who rebuilds her. One of her only memories, is of the legendary cyborg martial art Panzer Kunst. She puts her skills to use and becomes a bounty hunter/ hunter warrior, tracking down and eliminating criminals in the city. The story follows Alita on her journey as she impacts the lives of those she meets while attempting to rediscover her past.
James Cameron has been developing the property for years and always planned to direct, but with his various “Avatar” sequel commitments that has prevented him from taking the helm himself. In a statement, Cameron says:
“Robert and I have been looking for a film to do together for years, so I was pumped when he said he wanted to do Battle Angel. He’s very collaborative and we’re already like two kids building a go-kart, just having fun riffing creatively and technically. This project is near and dear to me, and there’s nobody I trust more than Robert, with his technical virtuosity and rebel style, to take over the directing reins. We’re looking forward to learning a lot from each other while we make a kick-ass epic.”
Robert Rodriguez also said in a statement:
“Battle Angel is an incredibly rich and vibrant epic in the tradition of Jim Cameron’s spectacular, character-driven films. Getting to work from Jim’s terrific and visionary script while learning the cutting edge techniques he’s pioneered is a master class in filmmaking. It’s an honor to explore the world of Alita along with Jim and Jon, whose films have impacted me for decades.”
Cameron is currently still lat work on his “Avatar” sequels which are due to shoot next year.
