However, the “X-Men” spinoff movie is very much alive and back on after the 20th Century Fox hired “Edge of Tomorrow” helmer Doug Liman to direct. While details on the plot are still unknown Collider recently spoke with the films producer Simon Kinberg, who gave some new information on the film starring Channing Tatum as the Cajun mutant.
For those of you not familiar with Kinberg and his work, he is sort of the 20th Century Fox version of Kevin Feige at Marvel Studios, an overseer of all the mutant Marvel movie properties. He understands that while these films might all exist in the same cinematic universe, their tones and feel can be drastically different:
“I mean Deadpool obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies,” says Kinberg. “The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas Deadpool is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.”
This is nothing new, we saw an heist movie with Marvel’s “Ant-Man”, but what may make Gambit different, are his comments on it being a sexy thriller. While “Ant-Man” was comedic and fun in its approach, from Kinberg’s comments I’m getting the feeling we will get something a lot more sophisticated and adult from Doug Liman on “Gambit”.
“Gambit” is for release on October 7th next year.
