The film’s intense interest caused the Fandango website to surge to seven times the normal peak level in less than 24 hours:
“This is an extraordinary time for the industry, which experienced unprecedented ticketing demand last night for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the enthusiasm for this year’s most anticipated movie is out of this world and we expect it to continue all the way to its debut on Dec. 18.”
Fandango said in a statement. The demand has forced movie theatres to continually add more showings and are struggling to meet demand particularly for IMAX screenings. The site goes on to say that Episode 7 has broken every previous IMAX record, taking over $6.5 milllion so far.
The film also accounted for 95% of all ticket sales on MovieTickets.com over the 24 hours period. The demand and interest was so great it was reported both Fandango and MovieTickets.com crashed.
The tickets went on sale after the debut of Mondays full trailer during the half-time of monday night football. At the time of writing this the trailer has been viewed an incredible 18 million times on the Star Wars official youtube channel.
