Will Smith rose to box office super stardom after transferring to movies in the mid 1990s, one of the roles that helped him become a global movie star icon was 1996’s “Independence Day”. He will not be returning for the sequel, due to scheduling and a clear lack of desire to participate in sequels.  Thanks to 20th Century Fox’s marketing tool for the film, the website Warof1996.com, we have the reason why his character,Lt. Steven Hiller will not popup in “Independence day: Resurgence”.

 

The site gives users a chance to fill the twenty year gaps between the first film in 1996 and the upcoming sequel with an interactive timeline. In the timeline, an entry for 2007 there’s a ‘Breaking News’ story which reveals the character died during a test flight of an alien hybrid fighter. The report says:

“While test piloting the ESD’s first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of ’96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.”

Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner reprise all their roles from the original and are joined by Jessie Usher  and Maika Monroe taking on two of the child roles from the 1996 film. Newcomers to the franchise Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Angelababy, Sela Ward and Joey King also star. Check out a mock trailer for the website below.
